PRCN is not the end of an ANO's training. Refresher and Refresher-cum-Promotion courses are mandatory throughout an ANO's tenure, and since the commission runs to age 55 — extendable to 58 under NCC Rules — that is a commitment measured in decades.
Preparation material, not the course. VSVSV is a private learning platform. We are not affiliated with the NCC, the Directorate General NCC, or the Ministry of Defence. We do not run PRCN, the ANO Refresher, the GCI course or any Selection Board, and nothing here confers commissioning, appointment, nomination, a course place or any certification. This is general awareness written to help you prepare. Your unit, your Group HQ and your Directorate hold the authoritative position — confirm anything that affects your candidature with them.
The two course types
The Refresher course keeps a serving ANO current. Syllabus changes, policy is amended, and skills that are not used regularly decay. It brings you back up to date.
The Refresher-cum-Promotion course does the same and additionally sits on the path to promotion within the ANO cadre.
Which applies to you, and when, is set by the NCC and depends on your service and stage. Your unit and Group HQ hold that answer — this page will not guess at your schedule.
What these courses tend to cover
The ground follows the ANO role itself:
- Drill and ceremonial — refreshed, and at the standard you are expected to instruct at.
- Weapon training theory and range procedure.
- Map reading — grid references, conventional signs, compass work.
- Physical training standards.
- First aid.
- Leadership and instructional technique — how to teach, not just what.
- Disaster management.
- Documentation and administration — enrolment, attendance, certificate-exam support.
- Policy updates — what has changed since you were last on a course.
That last one is the reason these courses exist. An ANO who trained under an earlier syllabus and never refreshed will be teaching cadets for an examination that has moved on — and the certificate examination has changed substantially under the current order. See The NCC Certificate Exam Pattern.
Where serving ANOs are usually rusty
Not from any official assessment — from what the role demands versus what an ANO actually does week to week:
- Drill you command but rarely perform yourself.
- Weapon handling, if your unit's range access has been limited.
- Map reading, which decays fast without use.
- Physical standards, several years into a teaching career.
- Policy and syllabus changes, which arrive quietly and are easy to miss.
Arriving prepared
- Ask your unit what applies to you — course type, timing, and what to bring.
- Refresh the perishable skills first — map reading and weapon theory decay fastest.
- Restart physical conditioning early, on the same logic as SHAPE-1 and BPET.
- Read up on what has changed, particularly the certificate examination, since your cadets sit it.

What we do and do not do
We publish ANO Refresher preparation material: revision of the subject ground above, self-checks we write ourselves, and orientation on duties, documentation, training methodology and course readiness. We do not run the Refresher or Refresher-cum-Promotion course, and nothing here counts toward promotion or any official requirement.
