What the C Certificate is
The NCC C Certificate is the highest cadet certificate awarded by the National Cadet Corps. It marks completion of the senior-division three-year programme and the written + practical exams set at the most advanced cadet level. Holding a C Certificate makes you eligible for several Army direct-entry routes and is the level most consequential for recruitment.

Who can earn it
- Senior-division cadets (college / university level) who have held the B Certificate.
- Cadets who have completed at least three years in the senior division (with the minimum parade attendance) and attended the required number of camps — typically the Combined Annual Training Camp (CATC), and where applicable a national-level camp such as Republic Day Camp, Thal Sainik Camp, or Vayu Sainik Camp.
- Cadets cleared by their ANO and unit for both the written paper and the practical evaluation.
Exact attendance and camp requirements vary by directorate and are revised in DG NCC training directives — confirm yours with your ANO before exam season.
What the exam covers
The C exam is more comprehensive than the B and tests the cadet as a future leader, not just a participant.
Written paper — common subjects
- NCC general (advanced) — history, organisation, role in national integration
- National integration & awareness — Indian states, freedom movement, current affairs
- Drill (theory + drill commands)
- Weapon training (advanced — 5.56 mm rifle, LMG basics depending on syllabus year)
- Map reading (advanced — service protractor, prismatic compass, route planning)
- Field craft & battle craft (advanced)
- Personality development & leadership (in depth)
- Adventure training, social service, health & hygiene, environmental awareness
Specialist subjects (wing-specific)
Naval Wing — seamanship, ship modelling, navigation, communications. Air Wing — aircraft recognition, aero-modelling, principles of flight, basic meteorology. Army Wing — military history, infantry weapons, communications.
Practical evaluation
- Squad drill & ceremonial — including commanding a squad.
- Weapon handling — stripping/assembly, loading, firing position, fire-control orders.
- Map reading — grid references, compass bearings, route planning.
- Field craft & battle craft — judging distance, fire & movement, individual tactics.
Marking scheme (typical pattern)
- Written paper — 350 marks, entirely multiple-choice on OMR sheets: 175 questions at 2 marks each, with −0.5 deducted for a wrong answer and nothing deducted for a blank.
- Practical — ~30 marks across drill, weapon, map, and field craft.
- The paper is 175 multiple-choice questions, 2 marks each, on OMR sheets. A wrong answer deducts 0.5.
- Total 500 marks — 350 written, 150 practical.
- Grading: A grade 70% and above, B grade 55% to below 70%, C grade 33% to below 55%; below 33% is a fail.
- You must also clear 33% in each of the four papers, not just on aggregate.

What the C Certificate gets you
- NCC Special Entry Scheme into the Indian Army — a reserved entry route for NCC C Certificate holders, with vacancies announced periodically by Army Headquarters.
- Bonus marks / preference at the SSB stage — for several officer-entry schemes, the C Certificate awards bonus marks at SSB or qualifies you for early screening.
- Paramilitary recruitment — CRPF, BSF, CISF, SSB, ITBP recruitment notifications often give weightage or relaxation to NCC C holders.
- State police recruitment — most state notifications give bonus marks to NCC C holders.
- College admissions — many universities offer reserved seats or bonus marks for B and C certificate holders.
- Career signal — even where no formal bonus exists, the C Certificate is a strong signal of leadership and discipline in any selection interview.

How to prepare
- Hold and renew your B foundation — the C syllabus assumes you already know everything in B. If your B-level fundamentals are weak, fix them first.
- Get the current DG NCC syllabus from your ANO — the C syllabus is revised more frequently than B.
- Study previous-year papers from your own directorate — wing and directorate-specific patterns vary.
- Camp attendance is mandatory — without the CATC certificate and (where applicable) the national camp, your name is unlikely to be forwarded for the C exam.
- Practice commanding a squad — the C practical includes leading drill, not just performing it.
- Time your written paper — 175 questions is a pacing problem as much as a knowledge one. Practise on printed OMR sheets under timed conditions, and decide your guessing rule before exam day.
