Why the category matters more than candidates expect
An Army Agniveer candidate chooses a category at the point of application, and that choice does two things at once. It sets the education a candidate must have, and it sets which version of the entrance paper they will sit.

The second half is the part most candidates underestimate. The categories do not share one paper with a different pass mark. Under the published syllabus documents for the current cycle there are three genuinely different paper shapes, and one of them weights English at half the paper while another has no English section at all.
The categories, and what each requires
These education requirements are taken from the Army's published eligibility criteria for the current cycle. They are among the provisions most often revised, so confirm them against your own ARO's live notification.
- Agniveer (General Duty) — Class 10 or Matric pass, with 45 per cent in aggregate. A light motor vehicle licence is preferred where a driver requirement exists.
- Agniveer (Technical) — 10+2 in Science with Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics and English, at 50 per cent in aggregate and 40 per cent in each of those subjects. Alternatively, 10+2 Science together with a one-year ITI course at NSQF level 4 or above.
- Agniveer (Clerk / Store Keeper Technical) — 10+2 in any stream, at 60 per cent in aggregate. This is the highest academic bar of the five.
- Agniveer Tradesmen (10th pass) — a simple Class 10 pass with 33 per cent in each subject. No aggregate is stipulated.
- Agniveer Tradesmen (8th pass) — for Syce, Housekeeper and Messkeeper roles. A simple Class 8 pass with 33 per cent in each subject.
- Women Military Police — a Class 10 entry, with a paper identical in shape to General Duty.
The age band under the eligibility criteria for the current cycle is seventeen and a half to twenty-one years for every category. That figure is read from a scanned document whose text quality is poor, so treat it as a prompt to check your own notification rather than as the last word.
The three paper shapes
Every category's CEE is 50 questions under the published syllabus documents for the current cycle. What changes is how those 50 are divided.
Shape one — General Duty, Tradesmen and Women Military Police
Four sections: General Knowledge 15, General Science 15, Mathematics 15, Logical Reasoning 5. The section order varies between the documents; the counts do not. This is the most common shape and it covers most of the categories.
Shape two — Technical
Four sections, two of which exist nowhere else: General Knowledge and Reasoning 10 as one combined section, Mathematics 15, Physics 15, Chemistry 10. A Technical candidate is sitting a science paper, and preparing from General Duty material would leave half of it unaddressed.
Shape three — Clerk / Store Keeper Technical
The only paper with a two-part structure, and the only one where English carries half the marks.
- Part I — General Knowledge 5, General Science 5, Mathematics 10, Computer Science 5.
- Part II — General English 25.
Under the syllabus document for the current cycle, twenty-five of fifty questions are English. A Clerk candidate who prepares as though this were a General Duty paper has prepared for half of it.
Clerk / Store Keeper Technical candidates also take a typing test during the online CEE under the rally notifications for the current cycle, at thirty words per minute in English, which those notifications describe as desirable. Only those who qualify proceed.
The bonus marks, and what they are not
The Army adds bonus marks to the CEE on certain grounds. Under the rally notification for the current cycle the CEE carries a maximum of 200 marks, and bonus marks are claimed at the rally with original certificates in hand.
- NCC 'A' Certificate — 5 marks, for General Duty, for Clerk / Store Keeper Technical and Technical, and for Tradesman.
- NCC 'B' Certificate — 10 marks, on the same basis.
- NCC 'C' Certificate — exempted from the CEE for General Duty and Tradesman, and 15 marks for Clerk / Store Keeper Technical and Technical.
- Son of a serviceman, or of a war widow, and the related grounds — 20 marks, for one son.
- Sportsman who has represented India internationally — 20 marks.
- Sportsman at senior or junior national level for a state, holding a medal — 15 marks.
Two things must be said about this list plainly. These are the recruitment rules of the Indian Army, published in its own notification. They are not a claim about any course, ours included. An NCC certificate is awarded by the NCC, and we take no part in awarding one or in the Army's assessment of it.
And a bonus is claimed with an original certificate at the rally. The original must be in hand on the day. A candidate who cannot produce it loses the bonus.
Choosing a category
The published rules answer this more than opinion does.
- Start from your education — it rules categories in and out before anything else. A Clerk application needs 60 per cent at 10+2; a Technical application needs specific subjects at specific marks.
- Then look at the paper shape — if your English is strong and your science is not, the Clerk paper and the Technical paper point in opposite directions.
- Then read your own ARO's notification to see the vacancies actually advertised in your area. A category with no vacancy in your ARO is closed to you this cycle, whatever your eligibility.
What we are not telling you
We are not telling you which category is easier, which has better prospects, or which you are likely to clear. Vacancies vary by ARO and by cycle, the cut-off is set against the vacancies rather than a fixed threshold, and marks are normalised across sessions to allow for difficulty varying between sittings. None of that is something a study guide can forecast, and a figure offered for it would be invented.
What we can do is make sure that when you pick a category, you are picking the paper you think you are picking.
