What the Navy recruits
The Indian Navy recruits Agniveers into several separate entries, and there are two written exams, not one.
Stage I is the INET, the Indian Navy Entrance Test. Candidates are shortlisted for Stage II on the marks obtained in it. Stage II is the Physical Fitness Test, then a second written exam, then the medical — in that order, and the advertisements state that the Stage II written exam is conducted only for candidates who qualify the PFT.
The entries also differ from one another more than most candidates expect. They are not variants of one paper: they differ in length, in standard, and in one case in an entire subject.

All figures below are read from the Navy's advertisements for the 01/2027 and 02/2027 batches.
Agniveer SSR
Under the advertisements for the 01/2027 and 02/2027 batches:
- One hundred questions, one mark each, computer-based.
- Four sections — English, Science, Mathematics, General Awareness.
- Standard 10+2.
- Duration one hour.
- Bilingual in Hindi and English, objective, multiple choice, four options with one correct.
- One fourth of a mark deducted for a wrong answer, in the Stage I paper.
- Candidates must pass in all sections as well as in the aggregate. The Navy sets those pass marks.
The age band is set per batch. For the 01/2027 batch it runs from candidates born on 01 December 2004 to those born on 31 May 2009. For the 02/2027 batch it runs from 01 May 2005 to 31 October 2009. Check the band for the batch you are actually applying to, because they differ.
Agniveer MR
Under the advertisements for the 01/2027 and 02/2027 batches:
- Fifty questions, one mark each, computer-based.
- Two sections — Science and Mathematics as one, General Awareness as the other.
- Standard 10th.
- Duration thirty minutes.
- Bilingual in Hindi and English, objective, multiple choice.
- One fourth of a mark deducted for a wrong answer, in the Stage I paper.
- Pass in all sections and in the aggregate.
Note the pace. Under the 01/2027 and 02/2027 advertisements, fifty questions in thirty minutes is a shorter paper but a faster one than SSR's hundred in an hour.
Agniveer SSR (Medical Assistant) — read this one carefully
Under the advertisements for the 01/2027 and 02/2027 batches this looks, on the surface, like SSR. One hundred questions, one hour, bilingual, standard 10+2, a quarter mark deducted at Stage I for a wrong answer, pass in all sections and in the aggregate.
The sections are not the same — they are English, Science, Biology, and General Awareness.
Biology replaces Mathematics — this is a distinct paper rather than a variant of SSR. A candidate who prepares from SSR material has studied for a Mathematics section that is absent here, and skipped the Biology section that is present. If you are applying to Medical Assistant, this is the single most important line in this article.
Agniveer MR (Musician)
Under the advertisement for this entry in the current cycle:
- Bilingual and objective, two sections — Science and Mathematics, General Awareness.
- Standard 10th.
- Duration thirty minutes.
The question count for this paper is absent from the advertisement we have read — so we state none. That is a gap in the published source rather than an omission here, and inventing a number to fill it would be worse than leaving it open. Read the advertisement for the batch you are applying to.
The rule that catches candidates out
Every Navy entry above carries the same requirement under the 01/2027 and 02/2027 advertisements: pass in every section, and in the aggregate.
This is a genuinely different constraint from a total-marks cut-off, and it changes how a candidate should allocate preparation time. A candidate strong in Science and General Awareness and weak in Mathematics can post a comfortable total and still not clear the paper, because the Mathematics section is assessed on its own. Under this rule, the weakest section is the one that decides the outcome, and time is better spent there than on extending a strength.
What the published sources do NOT give
We are being explicit about this because most material on Navy recruitment is not.
The per-section question split is not published for any Navy paper — the advertisements state the total and name the sections. The separate syllabus documents on the official portal give topic lists and no counts. Two independent documents, neither carrying the split. So a claim that SSR is "25 English, 25 Science, 25 Maths, 25 General Awareness" is somebody's assumption, not the Navy's statement — and we do not repeat it.
What the syllabus documents do give is the topic scope, and that is genuinely useful. The SSR syllabus runs four columns matching the four sections, and the MR syllabus confirms the two-section structure by name. We have a separate article on those topic lists.
One published rule worth knowing about
Under the SSR advertisement for these batches, NCC 'C' Certificate holders are exempted from Stage I INET entirely and are issued a direct call-up for Stage II, subject to verification through the Directorate General NCC.
That is a recruitment rule of the Indian Navy, published in its own advertisement. It is not a claim about any course. The certificate is awarded by the NCC, and we take no part in awarding one or in the Navy's verification of it.
What to do
- Identify your entry exactly — SSR, MR, Medical Assistant or Musician — before you buy or read anything.
- If it is Medical Assistant, prepare Biology — not Mathematics.
- Find your weakest section and work there first — the sectional rule makes that the highest-value hour you have.
- Read the advertisement for your batch, because the age band alone differs between 01/2027 and 02/2027.
