The Girl Cadet Instructor (GCI) cadre is an instructor route for women within the NCC. It is regularly confused with the ANO route, and the two are genuinely different things — which matters, because they have different eligibility and different paths.

This is general awareness written to help you prepare. Your unit, your Group HQ and your Directorate hold the authoritative position — confirm anything that affects your candidature with them.
The distinction that matters
The ANO route is a commissioning path. A teacher is nominated, goes through the three-tier Selection Board, completes PRCN, and is commissioned at Lieutenant rank. See What Is the PRCN Course?.
The GCI cadre is an instructor route for women, and it is not the same as being commissioned as an ANO. Women do also become ANOs — OTA Gwalior runs PRCN for women, including a shorter Part-I for Air and Naval Wing Lady ANOs — so the existence of the GCI cadre does not mean the officer route is closed to women. They are two separate routes, and which is open to you depends on your circumstances and on official eligibility rules.
If you are weighing them up, the honest first step is to establish which one you are actually eligible for, and that is a question for your institution and your Directorate, not for a website.
Why the cadre exists
Girls and women form a substantial part of the NCC's cadet strength, across the Junior Wing and Senior Wing. Units need women instructors — for instructional quality, for supervision at camps and residential activities, and because cadets benefit from instructors who reflect the unit.
What a GCI does
The work is instructional, and the ground overlaps the ANO's substantially:
- Instructing cadets in the syllabus, across theory and practical
- Drill and ceremonial
- Supporting camp conduct and cadet supervision
- Cadet welfare and discipline
- Supporting the unit's training programme
The subject matter is shared with the ANO track — drill, weapon-training theory, map reading, first aid, physical training, leadership, instructional technique, camp conduct, documentation. What differs is the cadre, the route into it, and the terms of the appointment.
Establishing your eligibility
We deliberately do not publish an eligibility checklist for GCI. Eligibility, selection and appointment are set officially, vary by directorate and are revised, and a confident-looking list on a private website is exactly how people end up preparing for the wrong thing.
Ask, in this order:
- Your institution's NCC unit, if it has one
- The parent NCC Battalion your institution reports to
- Your state NCC Directorate
They hold the current position on vacancies, eligibility and the process.
What we do and do not do
We publish GCI preparation material — the shared instructional ground above, orientation on the cadre, and self-checks we write ourselves. We do not run the GCI course, select, nominate or appoint anyone, and nothing here confers any cadre membership, appointment or certification. Those are handled entirely through official NCC channels.
