Every NCC sub-unit needs an Associate NCC Officer (ANO) — a commissioned, part-time officer drawn from the host institution's own teaching staff. PRCN, the Pre-Commission Course NCC, is the training a nominated teacher completes to earn that commission.

We do not run PRCN, the ANO Refresher, the GCI course or any Selection Board, and nothing here confers commissioning, appointment, nomination, a course place or any certification. This is general awareness written to help you prepare. Your unit, your Group HQ and your Directorate hold the authoritative position — confirm anything that affects your candidature with them.
Where PRCN sits in the path
PRCN is the third of three stages, not the first. Teachers often discover this late.

The four academies
Where you go depends on your wing and gender:

The course is typically three months residential. Academies run several batches a year; you report on the date in your joining instructions, medically cleared and in the prescribed kit.
Who is eligible
Eligibility is set by the NCC and varies with directorate and vacancy, so treat this as the general shape and confirm your own position:
- You must be teaching faculty at the host institution. Librarians, lab assistants and other non-teaching cadres typically do not qualify — this is the single most common disqualifier.
- You need to be physically fit enough to clear the SHAPE-1 medical standard.
- You must be able to commit to three months away, residential.
- Institutions generally look for a teacher with steady tenure rather than a recent joiner, because the institution has to back the nomination.
A commonly cited age band is roughly 28 to 45, but age rules change and are set officially — check yours rather than relying on any guide, including this one.
What the commission involves afterwards
This is the part teachers most often underestimate.
- Commissioning is at Lieutenant rank.
- The commission runs until age 55, extendable to 58 under NCC Rules.
- Refresher and Refresher-cum-Promotion courses are mandatory throughout your tenure — PRCN is the beginning of a training commitment, not the end of one. See What Is the ANO Refresher Course?.
- You run the unit day to day: training, documentation, camps, certificate-exam support, cadet welfare.
What PRCN is like
The academies are demanding, and the published joining instructions are explicit that non-compliance can make trainees liable to be reverted to their directorate or unit — what candidates call Return to Unit (RTU). The course covers drill and ceremonial, weapon handling, map reading and field craft, physical training against BPET standards, and instructional technique.

What we do and do not do
We publish preparation material — revision of the NCC syllabus, fitness and medical readiness, drill and weapon-handling theory, documentation checklists, and practice questions we write ourselves. We do not run PRCN, sit on any Selection Board, nominate candidates, or issue anything that counts officially. Your nomination, selection and commissioning are handled entirely through official NCC channels.
