A cadet's training is laid out in the syllabus period by period, across two academic years and, for the C Certificate, a third. An Associate NCC Officer's training is structured completely differently — and teachers weighing up the nomination are often surprised by how.
Preparation material, not the course. VSVSV is a private learning platform. We are not affiliated with the NCC, the Directorate General NCC, or the Ministry of Defence. We do not run PRCN, the ANO Refresher, the GCI course or any Selection Board, and nothing here confers commissioning, appointment, nomination, a course place or any certification. Your unit, your Group HQ and your Directorate hold the authoritative position.
The shape of it, compared
| Cadet (A / B / C) | ANO | |
|---|---|---|
| Unit of training | Syllabus periods | Course stages |
| Delivery | Weekly parades across the academic year, plus camps | A residential block, then recurring courses |
| Duration | 2 academic years, plus a 3rd year for C | ~3 months residential, then a career-long obligation |
| Selection | Join the unit | Three-tier Selection Board before the course |
| Ends when | The certificate is awarded | It does not — Refresher courses continue to age 55 |
For how the cadet side works, see How NCC Training Actually Works.
Stage 1 — Nomination and Caretaker attachment
The Principal nominates an eligible teacher from the institution's own teaching staff. The teacher is provisionally attached to the parent NCC Battalion as a Caretaker Officer — in practice, doing the job before holding the commission.
Non-teaching cadres — librarians, lab assistants — typically do not qualify. This is the most common disqualifier, and it is worth establishing before anything else.
Stage 2 — The three-tier Selection Board
Three interviews, each attended in person:
- Battalion Commanding Officer
- Group Commander
- Directorate Selection Board — a panel including Army, Navy and Air Force representatives and the Department of Education
This is the filter. Detail on what each tier looks for is in The ANO Selection Board.
Stage 3 — PRCN, the Pre-Commission Course
Typically three months, residential. Which academy depends on wing and gender:
| Academy | Who attends |
|---|---|
| OTA Kamptee, Maharashtra | Men, Army Wing |
| OTA Gwalior, Madhya Pradesh | Women. Also runs a shorter 21-day Part-I for Air and Naval Wing Lady ANOs |
| Naval Base Kochi or Vizag | Naval Wing, men |
| Air Force Academy Tambaram | Air Wing, men |
The course covers drill and ceremonial, weapon handling, map reading and field craft, physical training against BPET standards, and instructional technique — how to teach it, not only how to do it. The published joining instructions are explicit that non-compliance can make trainees liable to be reverted to their directorate or unit.
Getting ready for it is a separate exercise from getting through the Board: What Is the PRCN Course? and SHAPE-1 and BPET.
Stage 4 — Commissioning, and the part that never ends
Commissioning is at Lieutenant rank. The commission runs to age 55, extendable to 58 under NCC Rules.
And then the training continues. Refresher and Refresher-cum-Promotion courses are mandatory throughout an ANO's tenure — which, on a commission of that length, means returning to formal training repeatedly across decades. This is the stage teachers most often do not price in when they accept the nomination.
That recurring cycle is also what keeps a unit's teaching current. The certificate examination has changed substantially under the current order, and an ANO who trained under an earlier syllabus and never refreshed would be preparing cadets for a paper that no longer exists. See What Is the ANO Refresher Course?.
What we deliberately do not tell you
We do not publish a period-level breakdown of the instructor courses, because we do not have an authoritative one. The cadet certificates have a published syllabus that allots periods subject by subject; we have not seen an equivalent public allotment for PRCN, the ANO Refresher or the GCI course, and we are not going to estimate one and present it as fact. What is set out above — the stages, the academies, the typical duration, the rank and tenure — is what can be stated from public material.
For anything that affects your own candidature — eligibility, age limits, vacancies, dates, which course applies to you — the authority is your institution's unit, the parent Battalion and your state Directorate, in that order.
What we do
We publish preparation material: revision of the NCC syllabus a candidate is expected to know, fitness and medical readiness, drill and weapon-handling theory, instructional technique, documentation practice, and self-checks we write ourselves. We do not run any of the courses above, do not sit on any Selection Board, and cannot nominate, select or appoint anyone.
